How a Reverse Osmosis System Works

You’ve probably heard of osmosis in relation to biology and cells, and this idea is similar in a reverse osmosis system. With a reverse osmosis system, the cold water from your well or main water line is pushed at a high rate of speed through a permeable film. This film is designed to capture contaminants, which are larger than water molecules. As the water is pushed through, the contaminants are trapped and the water molecules, including the healthy minerals, flow into a small storage tank, where the newly–cleaned water resides, ready for use.

Common Problems with Reverse Osmosis Systems

Reverse osmosis systems are pretty durable, but at some point you may need to call for repairs for your system. Common issues that can develop with a reverse osmosis system include:

  • Clogged water feeder valve: Sometimes sediment can get inside the feeder valve and clog it.
  • Clogged membrane: The membrane collects a great deal of contaminants and may become clogged.
  • Low water pressure: The water pressure coming from a reverse osmosis system should be 40 psi. If it isn’t, one of our trained experts can determine why your pressure isn’t correct.
  • Pressure in holding tank isn’t correct: The storage tank can lose water pressure for a few reasons, including rupture of the air bladder.
  • Automatic shut–off valve isn’t working: Typically this calls for replacement of the valve, which should only be handled by an expert.
