Why MERV Matters with Air Filtration

Just as a car or heater has a rating to describe its efficiency, so too do air filters. This rating, known as its MERV (minimum efficiency reporting value), will tell you how effective a particular filter is. It’s important to understand what MERV is so that you install and use an air filter that will effectively meet your indoor air quality needs.

What Is MERV?

As mentioned above, MERV is a scale. This scale ranges from 1 to 20, with 20 being the most effective – however, this doesn’t mean you should automatically install an air filter with a MERV of 20. Why not? Any air filter with a MERV rating of 13 and above are considered HEPA filters. Many times, HEPA filters can be too strong for residential HVAC systems, and they will restrict air flow. If you require a HEPA air filter, work with an expert before installing one to ensure it will allow the air flow your HVAC needs. So what MERV range should you look for? Here is a quick guideline to review:

  • 1–4 – this range is where your standard air filter falls; it captures only large particles over 10 micrometers (for comparison, viruses and bacteria are 0.3 microns).
  • 5–8 – air filters in this MERV range capture all of the above, plus pollen, some mold spores, dust mites, pet dander and most other allergens.
  • 9–12 – filters within this MERV range capture all of the above, as well as very fine dust and dirt particles, smaller allergen particles.
